While everyone knows that the skin has to be nourished, the question now is, “what are the right nutrients for my skin?” What are those essential nutrients that can help you achieve healthy skin? Here are some ideas.


Eating foods rich in antioxidants like Vitamins A, C and E or beta-carotene can stop damage caused by free radicals. These free radicals destroy skin cells and cause signs of aging. These antioxidants can be found in different vegetables and fruits. 

Examples of these are strawberries, kale, spinach and varieties of peppers. Tomatoes also contain lycopene which is an antioxidant beneficial to skin health.

Ensure you also eat fish rich in Omega-3 acids. These monounsaturated fats help to keep your skin’s top layer strong and firm, helping to keep pollutants and toxins out of your system. Omega-3s can be found in salmon, trout, sardines and tuna.

For proper skin health, you need to eat a healthy diet. In addition, ensure you get enough sleep, drink enough water, exercise often and stay away from smoking. Also, ensure you use sunscreen when you’re going to be outdoors within the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30. Also wear protective clothing like hats and scarves when you’re going to be exposed to sunlight. If possible, avoiding long exposure to sun.

While eating a balanced meal is the best way to get a healthy skin and complexion, you could also take nutrition supplements. You should take multivitamins to boost your intake of nutrients if you’re not already eating a balanced meal. Also take them if you spend a lot of time outside and are exposed to high levels of secondhand smoke and air pollution.
